Since we last wrote about SOAK’s phenomenal debut album Before We Forgot How to Dream the adroit artist’s work has accrued even more accolades, including the Irish Choice Music Prize Album of the Year. The song “Reckless Behavior” showcases Bridie Monds-Watson’s idiosyncratic voice, equally sweet and rough at turns, complemented by soaring strings. Lyrics such as “I won’t waste my youth this year” indicate an earnestness both characteristic of her youth and wise beyond her years. Fresh off her tour with the Lumineers, SOAK will be headlining a full band show at DC9 tomorrow, June 24.
Cody Fitzgerald and Molly Grund, otherwise known as Stolen Jars, are a duo that create delicate, complex layers of sound as a foundation to support their harmonies. “Waves” is one such example, with instrumentation that expands and contracts in fascinating ways, deftly depicting what it’s like to fall through a memory and swiftly be returned to reality. They capture the sounds present around them, highlighted here with their use of a hammered dulcimer to mimic train track signals. Given the vast array of instruments they utilize, their show at Bossa this Sunday, June 26 is sure to be a memorable one.
