Today's Throwback Thursday Video is also a preview of the show I'll be seeing tomorrow night - Mount Moriah and Skylar Gudasz at the Rock & Roll Hotel. "The Letting Go" was the biblically named band's first single, released on the seemingly defunct Holidays for Quince Records. The ache is palpable in this piano-driven ballad, with the smoky and understated delivery of singer Heather McEntire peeling back the layers of scar tissue syllable by plaintive syllable. The song stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it. Mount Moriah are touring in support of their third album, How To Dance, released last month on Merge Records.
You might remember Skylar Gudasz from her tour with Big Star's Third. The video for "I'm So Happy I Could Die" is a sardonic raised middle finger to an ex-lover, the musical equivalent of your ex-girlfriend scratching all your records before stealing your goldfish. It's the next musical stage of grief after Jenny Owen Youngs' "Fuck Was I". The song is the first single from her debut album, Oleander, released in January on Daniel 13.
She'll be joining fellow Carolinians Mount Moriah on the first leg of their tour, which kicks off tomorrow. Doors open at 8, and tickets are $12 in advance or $14 at the door. Come and check it out.
