As summer gives way to fall's cooler temperatures, the concert calendar suddenly starts heating up. We start with a double-header on Monday, with the cool Canadian yacht prog of Destroyer followed by the Midwestern chamber pop of The Lighthouse & the Whaler. Destroyer is the "main project" of the New Pornographers' Dan Bejar, the wild-haired, muppet-voiced experimentalist. Catch them at the 9:30 Club tomorrow, with doors opening at 7. TLATW produce a brand of shimmery, gorgeous pop more closely identified with California or the Pacific Northwest than with Cleveland. They're playing DC9, with doors at 8.
Friday brings us a perfect storm of challenging and beautiful music, with The Dodos opening for seminal Danish indie rockers Mew at the 9:30 Club. I'll have more on this show later this week.

Saturday features the cool New Jersey jazz of Marco Benevento followed by an easterly blast of California "beach goth" from The Growlers.
