Skylar Gudasz is a North Carolina singer-songwriter with a voice of such startling, unprepossessed beauty that it will, in the words of R.E.M.'s Mike Mills, "quiet and command a room". If you're a fan of the vocal stylings of Laura Gibson or Julianna Barwick, you'll be in your element here. Her voice has an effortless elegance that is otherworldly, almost siren-like, in its pull.
Ms. Gudasz has not only released a new single, but she'll also be gracing DC with her presence as a part of the Big Star's Third tour. The project features Jody Stephens, the sole surviving original member of Big Star, alongside musicians including Mills, Pat Sansone of Wilco, the Jayhawks' Gary Louris, the db's Chris Stamey, and others, performing Big Star's legendary album Third/Sister Lovers in its entirety with chamber orchestra accompaniment. The concert will also feature a full performance of Big Star's #1 Record, including hits like 'Thirteen' and 'In the Streets' (later popularized as the theme song of That 70s Show). Doors open at 7pm, and tickets are $30.
